What’s in a name?

Posted in castle, funny on March 25, 2013 by D.B.

This is quite odd.

There’s five lines on Wikipedia about “Schloss Heidelberg“. This might be because it is a forgotten place in Switzerland that does not attract THAT much attention.

Not quite our Heidelberger Schloss, probably the most famous ruin in Germany (even Europe?). And yet, the powers that be, far away in the regional capital of Stuttgart, officially use the term Schloss Heidelberg. Minor details that actually make a difference in German. As if it was the building’s name, such as Schönbrunn in Vienna oder Sanssouci in Potsdam. For what it’s worth: There was a place called Heidelberg before the castle came around starting in the 1220s.

It’s just that those in charge don’t seem to know it.

Premiere

When I started this blog, I was wondering how long I could keep posting without showing the castle. It’s been almost two years now. But with time at ever shorter supply, I think I better change my routine before the blog runs dry anyway.

So here we go… a slight glimpse of the world famous ruin that’s visited by thousands and thousands of tourists each year.

At this time, thoughts go out to the people of Japan who have truly been hit by a threefold catastrophe that’s causing heavy repercussions all around the world.

Castle, this way please

A stylised castle silhouette showing people which way to take from Molkenkur funicular station. Erm, how about taking the funicular down there? Odd…

It started snowing on Sunday morning and hasn’t stopped since. So expect more of the white stuff over the next days.

No walk in the park

Some day, I’ll be posting a picture of the castle itself. For now, I shall resist. But here’s another one from the castle gardens.

Watching out

castle_panYet another look at the city from above, this time from the castle ruins. It sums up a couple of sights that I featured before in detail, like Hexenturm, uni library, Jesuite church, Heuss bridge, you might even spot Blauer Klaus in the distance, on the right hand side next to the spire. The white barrel-shaped building next to the tower is part of the old theatre. More on that soon.

I spent my day off climbing up and down castle hill to refill my archives (also looking for a decent contrast shot, but to no avail). This is a tiny stall next to the castle entrance, selling everything a tourist needs. You may now brush up your Japanese using this picture! 😉

Castle gardens

Plans to build a new visitors’ centre (including public toilets!) near the castle entrance have finally been brought forward. This calmer part of the castle gardens will remain unchanged for a while, though. And I, for one, don’t think this is that bad.
