Mark Twain

Klaus Mombrei gave a fantastic performance as Mark Twain at Hirschgasse restaurant on Open Heritage Day. This is where most of the fraternities used to have their fencing duels. There’s a nice story in there: The town of Heidelberg banned all fencing. A smart landlord on the other side of the river built a fencing room on top of his restaurant – Neuenheim wasn’t part of the town until the incorporation in the 1920s. Fencing came to an end, though,  according to Baden principality law (so the students eluded to Hesse territory nearby). It was later reestablished, and the last duel was fought at Hirschgasse in 1979.

It’s time for some rapiers tomorrow, here’s a close up of “Mark Twain”.
