Cross-eyed Joe

Wie arm, die sich lieben und scheiden
Das haben erfahren wir beiden
Mir graut vor dem stillen Haus
Dein Tüchlein noch lässt du wehen
Ich kann’s vor Tränen kaum sehen
Schau still in die Gasse hinaus.

How poor are those who love and part
The two of us have experienced it
I dread the silent house
Your handkerchief is still waving
I can hardly see it through my tears
Silently, I’m watching the alley

Joseph v. Eichendorff, Zum Abschied (Departure)

It’s well-known that about half of Eichendorff’s poems are of a melancholic or even dolorous kind.

That the baron himself was actually heavily cross-eyed is a fact revealed only to those who give his portrait in philosophers’ garden a closer look!
