Campaignwatch IV

linksparteiCheap populism at its very best. “Hands off Afghanistan”, our new left wing party “Die Linke” say.

This is off yourse one of the most debatable issues in German politics at the moment. Can the US still execute their right of self defence more than seven years after the 9/11 attacks? Is our liberty really at stake in the mountains of Hindukush, as a German defence secretary once said? Are 32 dead German soldiers (as well as several thousand Afghan civilians) not more than enough? Or do we have the right, or the even duty, to help the Afghan people to rebuild their country and fight the extremists who plan to subdue them again, deprive their women of civilian rights and reestablish a cruel dictatorship?

We can all argue about this, and everyone’s entitled to his or her own opinion. But one thing’s for sure: It’s neither a a topic that the European parliament will be heavily involved in, nor can it do anything about it. This is just skimming the anti-militaristic atmosphere of a majority society. In other words, populism.
